Class 6 – 1 Nephi 16-22: The Righteous Need Not Fear

Suggested Pre-Class Readings

Before watching the video for this class, please read 1 Nephi 16-22. As you’re reading, choose one of the course “Scripture Study Skills” to practice on these chapters.

These chapters contain writings of Isaiah…they can be difficult, to help you get more from these chapters, I suggest you read my article, “The Isaiah Map: An Approach to Teaching Isaiah.”

Digging Deeper

Watch the Church’s Book of Mormon Videos for 1 Nephi 16 and 1 Nephi 17-18 and 1 Nephi 18.

Here’s a copy of the “Isaiah Map” that you can use. I recommend using this to create your own copy of the map. Rewriting it will help you really internalize the information on the map.

For a written overview of the “Isaiah Map” see my article, “The Isaiah Map: An Approach to Teaching Isaiah.”

In the 1990s the Church released a seminary video called “I will prepare the way,” In which a high school student likens 1 Nephi 17 to her life. It’s still a great video and you can watch it here.

In the class video, we described how Nephi’s family called a place Shazer, but later stayed in a place that was called Nahom. The fact that Nahom already has a name is powerful evidence for the Book of Mormon’s authenticity. Learn more in Scripture Central’s video, “Who Called Ishmael’s Burial Place Nahom?”

Nephi describes a coastal region which they “called Bountiful, because of its much fruit and also wild honey” (1 Nephi 17:4–5). Many people wonder if such a coastal paradise ever existed in the Arabian Peninsula. Actually, it has! Learn more in Scripture Central’s video, “Has the Location of Nephi’s Bountiful Been Discovered?

This short article provides interesting insights into Nephi’s broken bow.

Many scholars suggest that parts of Isaiah were written after Lehi and his family left Jerusalem. If this is true, there are implications for how these passages appear in the Book of Mormon. If you’re interested in digging more into this topic, you might enjoy this podcast episode by Dr. Joshua Sears: “Deutero-Isaiah in the Book of Mormon,” Y-Religion Podcast Episode 86.

We’ll discuss this more in future classes, but you might want to download WordCruncher, and then watch this WordCruncher Quick Start Guide.
