Teaching Helps for Come Follow Me – Matthew 21-23, Mark 11, Luke 19-20, John 12

Here are some ideas for learning and teaching a few of the great principles in Matthew 19-20, Mark 10, Luke 18. And while you’re here, I recommend you check out my free online course, “Seeking Jesus.”

Short Clips from Seeking Jesus

I’ve pulled out short clips from the “Seeking Jesus Course” connected to this week’s readings that you could use as a morning devotional or spiritual thought.

Ideas for Learning More About Matthew 21-23, Mark 11, Luke 19-20, and John 12

***Jesus Wins***

If you wanted to remix the ideas in the “Jesus Wins” video above, you can find the PowerPoint slides here. I think the analogy of a sporting event is really powerful and this principle has deeply blessed my life. I hope it does the same for you and hose you teach.

***Which Way Do You Face?***

The Asch Experiment is one of the best-known experiments in psychology. Share this short video (less than two minutes) with the people you’re teaching. It’s such a fun video and people cannot believe that an individual would deliberately make the wrong choice just to please others. But this is in fact what happened in a majority of test subjects.

Have learners pair up and invite one to read John 12:42-43 and the other read John 12:49-50. Each reader should look for whether the people they read about focus more on what humans think or on what God thinks.

Have a discussion with learners about this contrast. Share personal stories for your life (or invite learners to do so) when you/they have been able to focus on following God’s will rather than the trap of loving “human praise more than praise from God” (John 12:43, NIV). How can we become more like Jesus so that we can say, “Whatever I say [and do] is just what the Father has told me to say [and do]” (John 12:50, NIV).
