Many people deserve credit for their help in the creation of this course. I list several people here, knowing that I will unintentionally leave out many people, for which I apologize.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its Leaders: Much of what I have learned and shared come from the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I’ve also used images and videos created by the Church in this Master Class.
The team at Scripture Central: Making videos is an expensive and time-consuming process. Many individuals at Book of Mormon Central helped in various ways on this project. Specifically, I acknowledge the efforts of Tracen Fitzpatrick, Stephen Jones, Benjamin Griffin, and Dow Wilson. I’m also very grateful to the different members of our live audience, each of whom made valuable contributions.
Colleagues: Over the past 25 years, I’ve worked closely with many religious educators who have helped me improve my understanding of the Old Testament and the ability to teach it. I hesitate to name anyone, given that literally dozens of colleagues have influenced me in ways large and small. For example, an EFY training from Clint Mortensen in the early 2000s, and a CES Symposium message from S. Michael Wilcox in 1999 still have echoes in my current classes. I’m sure that there are dozens of other classes and trainings I have sat in that influence what I teach, although I cannot always trace how I teach something to a specific source. I have learned much from my BYU colleagues and will attempt to recognize them individually within specific classes. I sat in on a class taught by Stephan Taeger while I was creating this course; watching him teach, plus our numerous conversations about both his classes and mine, had a significant impact on this course. Various online content creators, such as the team at the Bible Project videos, have also been very helpful. Finally, while I was never blessed to count Timothy Keller as a “colleague,” I acknowledge his profound influence on this course. I began developing this course during a time when I was reading several of his books and frequently listening to the Gospel and Life podcast featuring his sermons. Often I will specifically quote Timothy Keller, and there are many other times where his overall style or specific insights seep into what I’m teaching.
Others Who Have Helped: Several family members have provided feedback on this course, notably Lani Hilton, and my parents Lee and Shawna Hilton. Caroline Meredith and Cadence Heaston have assisted in preparing many of the available learning resources. Special thanks is also due to Kyle Nelson, Kevin Bushrow and others at MaxConnect for the time and expertise they have put into the course website design and other efforts. In addition, Lily Hobson, Jaclyn Pelfrey, David Perry, Lisa Spice, and many others have provided valuable support, for which I am grateful.
Use of AI: I want to acknowledge that I’ve used various AI tools in this course. For me, AI functions like a great research assistant, giving ideas, suggestions, fact-checking claims, and so forth. AI tools have also been used to create some of the visuals used in this course.
